6 Reasons to Love Running

About
  1. A Natural Boost: The “runner's high” is more than endorphins! Most runners report a heightened mood after a good workout, but did you know that your brain activity is actually mimicking the effects of drugs? Studies have shown the endorphins produced by exercising can’t cross the blood-brain barrier. Instead, that natural “high” from running is produced by an endocannabinoid called anandamide that activates the same part of the brain affected by THC!

  2. True Freedom: There is no sport in the world that requires so little to enjoy so much. Even the main equipment, shoes, are optional. With running you can start any time, at any experience level, anywhere — marathons have even been run on cruise ships before! Explore a new area while traveling, find a local trail, sign up for a digital marathon, or just start with a walk. The visual and physical rewards of running will meet you everywhere you go!

  3. Mindful Meditation: Almost all mental health experts agree that even 60 seconds of meditation a day boosts overall well-being. However, “finding the time” (re: making ourselves do it) is another matter. A run is a great way to trick yourself into some 1:1 quality meditation. Slip into a zen state by pushing past discomfort and focusing on a goal, mantra, or favorite song.

  4. Frivolous Fun: Running can’t all be serious! There is no shortage of fun charities, gatherings, and even pub crawls centered around the sport. Whether you prefer to run for a cause, or as a Claus, you will find “your people” wherever you go.

Looking for something to join? Check out local running sites and online apps to find a team or event near you (many are free!). Some popular resources include DASHR, Jogging Buddy, Run Together, Meetup, and Park Run.

  1. Becoming “That” Person: Becoming “that” running person in the family is, in fact, fun! No longer will loved ones struggle to find you a gift, or wonder what you’ll talk about at holidays. Running is a healthy and fun outlet for both your mind and body to explore.

  1. Fitness IS Fun!: Some days this can take some self-convincing, but the journey is worth it. According to the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) the recommended amount of exercise for adults is 20 minutes of vigorous activity 3x/week, or 30 minutes of moderate activity 5x/week. Benefits include reduced anxiety, blood pressure, and inflammation and increased circulation, endurance, energy, and overall wellness.

Ultimately everyone will have their own reasons to love running, but finding them can take some self-reflection and purposeful gratitude. If you feel you’ve hit a lull in your love affair of long miles, try treating yourself with a new bit of gear or fresh race to reignite the romance!
