Join us for this regional event benefitting the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation, CCF while bringing awareness to this insidious, silent killer.
Cholangiocarcinoma, CC, a highly lethal cancer with poor prognosis, arises from the bile ducts in the liver. It is often diagnosed at advanced stages when treatment is only minimally effective, emphasizing the imminent need for novel therapies. There are no effective strategies for prevention, early diagnosis or long-term treatment, indicating a significant unmet medical need.
100% of the net proceeds from our event will help The Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation, CCF, the leading global CC nonprofit, to fund research to find a cure and improve the quality of life for CC patients. This race is also in honor of Michelle McDonald who was taken at age 47 following a five-month battle with this disease.
Lack of attention means lack of funding means lack of research means lack of options. Being diagnosed with any form of cancer is traumatic; being diagnosed with a rare cancer is devastating. There are hundreds of thousands of rare cancer stories like this every year. From 2012 to 2016, 75% of clinical trials did not include any rare cancers by name. As of 2018, 79% of cancer patients lacking an FDA-approved targeted therapy had a rare cancer. In regards to cholangiocarcinoma, the rate of incidents and the rate of mortality are RISING. Cholangiocarcinoma had the highest percent increase in mortality rates and the second highest percent increase in number of cases of all cancers (+4% yoy). Texas leads the nation in both incidence and deaths from CC.
There is hope and, in the 5 years of Hot Peeps, tremendous progress HAS been achieved:
- FDA approval of the first three (3) new drugs to treat cholangiocarcinoma the last 2 years
- the Foundation has awarded 39 research fellowships totaling $2,050,000 in seed funding to investigators to raise awareness and inspire innovative, high-quality research
- Launched New Care Program sending kits to new patients throughout the United States.
Each and every donor plays a role in buying more time, more treatment options, and within the next 10 years…. finding a cure.
