About
Description:

Celebrate Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) on Saturday, November 2, 2013 with a morning 5K Run/Walk at River Ridge Park in addition to the activities taking place later during the day at the Centro Cultural Hispano de San Marcos! Dia de los Muertos occurs in November and is a traditional cultural holiday throughout the world for hundreds of years by the gathering of family and friends to pray for and remember their deceased loved ones. Unlike what the name implies, Dia de los Muertos does not celebrate death. It is a rejoicing and celebration of the lives of friends and family who have died.

This will be the groundbreaking first year for this event and everyone is invited to participate. There will be music, door prizes, face painting available onsite to early registrant arrivals (or come in your favorite Day of the Dead costume), and multiple chances to win unique trophy awards. Take a photo next to the legendary Day of the Dead icon Catrina, and her escort, Juanito. All registrants will receive a special commemorative medallion.

All proceeds generated will be allocated to Centro Cultural Hispano de San Marcos, a 501C3 nonprofit cultural center and museum, and the Johnnie T. Rosales Memorial Scholarship, a 501C3 nonprofit organization which provides scholarship awards to selected graduates of San Marcos High School.

Traditions of Day of the Dead include building private alters honoring the deceased using sugar skulls, marigolds, paper flowers, papel picado, pan de muertos and the favorite foods/beverages of the departed.  See www.sanmarcocentro.org for activites and workshops scheduled.
