I am a survivor. I have held trauma so long within, yet it possesses several crucial chapters of my life. My scars from being stabbed and beaten are part of the palette that paints a portrait of my life. I am a survivor not because of what it took away from me, but what it gave me. First, it gave me appreciation for the people close to me and the creation of healthy new relationships. Second, it mended my relationship with my faith. Lastly, it gave me hope for myself that I was more than a victim: that I could spread my story to provide strength to those riding trains on similar tracks. I was a survivor then and I am a survivor now. As I stand less than a year away from taking the bar exam as a law student at St. Mary’s, my dream of representing people like myself comes closer than ever. As a male, it’s never easy to come forward about domestic abuse, because society rejects the notion that men can be victims of abusive relationships. I will be the voice for those who feel voiceless. I am a survivor. But alone I am not, for survivors we are many. -Jared Hall
