Mission Reach Treasured Chests 5K

Welcome to the first annual Mission Reach “Treasured Chests 5K” brought to you by South Texas Breast Surgery and Dr. Maria Palafox.  We are partnering with Mi Gente, a 501 3c, being established to generate revenue to use to purchase ultrasounds, mammograms and breast biopsies for the uninsured and underinsured women of South San Antonio and South Texas.  With the support of Dr. Palafox, not only financially but professionally, we have been able to help ladies that have needed such services, but we quickly realized that much more is necessary.

If a woman finds a lump in her breast, she must first establish care with a primary care physician; even if she can get a mammogram through a free program, a woman must have a PCP to whom the results report can be sent.  Some free mammogram programs are specifically only for screening, so if a woman feels a lump in her breast, she may not be eligible for the program.  Many of these women are from rural South Texas, where travel to these services requires significant time and money. The mission of Mi Gente is to provide financial assistance to overcome these types of hurdles.

This 5K run on the city’s beautiful Brooks City Base will raise money explicitly for this purpose. Dr. Palafox has helped raise funds in the past for centers such as the Dauphin Center in Beaumont, Texas.  With your help and the help of community leaders, our vision is to expand services to the medically poor and develop the South Texas Breast Center right here on the South Side.
